This project questions who gets to control the narratives in material culture and discuss how to intervene in perpetuating ideas.︎︎︎

Drawing on the dual perspective of a British-Japanese designer/maker, this work steps into the role of a traditionally British or European craftsperson to explore how Japanning might represent a hybrid cultural narrative of a diverse landscape. By questioning who holds the power to shape narratives within material culture, this project critically examines how to challenge and intervene in the perpetuation of inherited ideas. A tray, a tea canister and a biscuit box was created using this alternative version of japanning.

The project traces how the constructed image of Wabi-Sabi stems from self-consciousness of the ruling party of Japan from the gaze of countries during the mid-19th century and the role it plays in shaping Japan national identity abroad and within. The installation stages exercises that help identify what Wabi-Sabi is, inspired by the vast interpretations of what Wabi-Sabi is from multiple media outlets, being performed by the designer. The designer uses their identity of being born in England to Japanese parents and their personal position of being in the ‘in-between’ to demonstrate the absurdity of having to perform acts of ethnicity to live up to the perceptions of national identity that people have.

In the Ems estuary, north of the Netherlands there is dredging of ports and canals to collect the marine clay which is then ripened and used to build dikes. This cycle of protecting the land with this clay can be seen symbolic of the relationship that the Netherlands has with the sea. As global warming causes the sea level to rise, the tensions between the land and the sea escalate and manifests in the material qualities of the waters. In this specific site, it can be physically seen within the turbidity of the water. This stops light from penetrating the waters which affect algae and other aquatic plants photosynthesizing.

As a human standing on the edge of the water, it is easy to probe this turbidity through visible change and register the darker murkier qualities from this stand point. Instruments such as a nephelometer would detect the how much light reaches the detector through the water. These tools represent how these changing landscapes are sensed.

The project developed into an exploration into how this turbidity could be sensed and what the sensors would be. This thought also began to try to contextualize the turbidity within the conflict between human activity and sea through the lens of a non human, a being closer to the sea scape than a human and a bio indicator of water quality, a mussel. Taking queues from the filtration of the mussel and using the materiality of the marine clay as a way to sense, the sensor took shape from traditional clay forming techniques of slip casting. The usual approach of the porous plaster walls taking the moisture out of slip to industrially producing vessels of clay, would become a device to absorb the sea water showing the turbidity no longer as just the color of the water but captured as layers of sediment.

Researching how the Black Kite experiences territoriality lead to following Vinciane Despret's ideas of modes of existence as a bird, cultural references such as stealing underwear from the washing lines in "A Winter's Tale", to the influence of white coloured rubbish becoming an indicator of territory.

The research resulted in opening up the interspecies borders by formulating a question of "Would you like to live here?" to the Black Kite in the form of a range of homeware created from embroidery and found white textiles and staging this question at the interspecies border, the washing line.Special thanks to Sow Studio for embroidery production.

Into the fold was a project conducting research into the paradoxical relationship between the cultural relationship of sacred forests and the globalised trade of timber in Japan. Looking at the nationalist agendas of portraying the closeness to nature in the actions such as showcasing sacred forests during state visits, alongside another reality of importing tropical timber from neighbouring Asian countries and the mismanagement of domestic softwood plantations.

The research was embodied in an experience where viewers were just asked to participate in folding origami trees to build a sacred forest for the paper Shinto shrine installation. However unknowingly to the viewer, embedded in the origami paper was the narrative of the research, as the viewer engages with the folding the further the narrative unfolds.

The inspiration for the jug came from trying to find permanence in the impermanent through the idea of copying an industrially produced form and recreating it with hand crafted forms. In this case, the jugs that come with irons was a central starting point. The thin form functions as easy to hold but also fits in the extra space around the iron. This form works in the favour of the design, as this

thin form allows the jug to be packed in an efficient and space saving way with no waste in space for transport. This form not only is functional but gives the jug character and life beyond a jug for an iron.

This project developed from the frequent questioning towards product designers of "do we need more designs of chairs?". "Saisei" is a response to that question. As we face the pressing issues of the climate crisis as a designer I wanted to re-evaluate what design could provide as a solution.

Inspired by the project "Zenkai house" of architect Katsuhiro Miyamoto which fixed a house damaged by the Hanshin earthquake by creating a new structure to support the internal existing structure, "Sansei" is an alternative mending method constructed from reinterpreted joints inspired by Japanese joinery to build a support for broken chairs. This design plays with two contrasting aesthetics when repairing and bringing visible repair to the forefront.

Each piece is constructed according to the size of the piece of furniture needing repair. The struts are cut from 24mm thickness of ply with a slight angle on one side so that it locks into one another when joints are made. The joint itself is a reinterpreted version of a traditional Japanese joint used to construct houses. Each joint was made using a tenon cutter and band saw. No glue or metal fastenings were used. Finished with a few coats of matt Osmo.
